The arms race was a competition between the Soviet Union and the United States for the possession of the most nuclear weapons, and therefore the most power, control and fear. The first nuclear bomb was created under the name "Manhattan project", and the test was codenamed "trinity", and was followed shortly after by the second nuclear bomb that was dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Soviet Union tested it's first atomic bomb (codenamed "Lightning") on 29 August 19. Both countries wanted to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) used to deliver nuclear weapons to its target. The first ICBM was R-7 Semyorka (Semyorka means "the digit 7" or "group of 7") developed by Russia in 1957, and was also used to launch sputnik into orbit.
In 1952, the U.S created the thermonuclear bomb, or hydrogen bomb, which was different from an atomic bomb in the way that the A-bomb used enriched uranium to create a fission reaction, while the H-bomb used a small A-bomb to heat lithium metal and split it into tritium (an isotope of hydrogen) which reacts with another hydrogen isotope to create fusion energy. Russia tested its first H-bomb in 1953.
In October 1957, the U.S built the Atlas missile, an ICBM whose warhead was over 100 times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In 1962, the U.S built the LGM Minuteman rocket. The letter “L” in “LGM” indicates that the missile is silo-launched; the “G” indicates that it is designed to attack ground targets; the “M” indicates that it is a guided missile.

After WWII, North Korea did not want to take part in re-assigning land, and so Korea was divided along the 38th parallel. The difference between the north and south is that North Korea is a dictatorship, while south Korea is a democracy.
On June 25, 1950, the Korean war started.
The Soviet Union gave materials, medical supplies, pilots and aircraft to North Korea, and the U.S aided South Korea. By September 1950, North Koreans pushed South Koreans and UN troops south to the perimeter of Pusan. However, on September 5, 1950, The Battle of Inchon occurred, and resulted in a decisive victory and strategic reversal in favor of the United Nations. The operation involved some 75,000 troops and 261 naval vessels, and led to the recapture of the South Korea capital Seoul two weeks later.
China felt threatened by the large American fleet just off their coast and in October, they sent 300,000 troops to help the North Koreans.
